Frequently asked questions

What is CQJP?

The Crazy Quilt Journal Project (CQJP) is an annual year-long challenge to promote crazy quilting and encourage participants’ creativity and growth.

The challenge calls for publication of each participant’s monthly crazy quilting journey.

The goal is to produce a major crazy quilting project within a calendar year.

The hope is individuals will display finished projects locally and enter contests.

Who can participate?

Anyone who is
  • willing to commit the time, energy, talent, and desire to create 12 individual blocks over a one-year period;
  • registers and
  • submits photographs of completed work monthly.
What is the overall vision?

The challenge started in hopes of growing interest in the techniques and art of crazy quilting.

We hope participants will enter their final projects created from the monthly efforts in local displays and contest venues so others might see their work.

We also hope to invite others into the creative world of crazy quilting by showcasing finished projects.

We hope to have some participants show their work at the national and international levels.

Do the finished blocks have to be put into a quilt?

No, but we hope that they are put into a project or project that can be displayed.

Suggestions include:
  • Art journal pages;
  • Books;
  • Jackets, shirts, skirts or other clothing;
  • Wall hangings;
  • Calendars;
  • Needle books;
  • Sewing kits;
  • Pincushions;
  • Baskets and
  • Bags.
The important factor is to create something you are proud to share that is crazy quilt focused.

Can we see other participant’s journal blocks?

Yes, Crazy Quilt Journal Projects from 2012 through last year are online and available for viewing.

When do I submit a photo?

Participants are encouraged to complete a crazy quilt block every month.

However, life often spoils our fun and skipping some months is okay…just submit the “catch-up” photos as they are available. See the page on submitting photos for details.

Are the blocks judged each month?

No, the blocks are your own challenge. Only you can judge when they are perfect.

We do encourage commenting on posted blocks.

Does my block have to include embroidery?

Yes. While crazy quilts were at times done without embroidery, these were used as everyday utilitarian quilts of necessity.

We want to promote modern crazy quilting and as such will not accept photos of blocks that are void of embroidery. Embroidery work should be prominent on the block.

Must the embroidery be done by hand?

Though many of us prefer hand embroidery, the block can include machine embroidery.

What information is needed to register?

First Name, Last Name, E-mail Address, Country of Residence, State of Residence (for USA participants).

You may include your personal blog’s title and  URL if you want it on to the participants blog list.

Blogging about your own individual progress helps motivate and teach others.

How do we submit our finished blocks?

Only photos are submitted.

Placing the photos on the CQJP Blog and Facebook group will help to motivate, but participants are ultimately responsible only to themselves.
